Operation Safe Neighborhoods

If you’ve lived in New Jersey for a while you know that auto thefts, specifically luxury type, are continually on the rise and have most recently been labeled by Governor Phil Murphy as an epidemic. During the last few years law enforcement around the state have asked their residents to lock their car doors and to not leave their key fobs inside. For the most part, the public has been receptive to this campaign and have been abiding by this recommendation. This has made it harder on thieves and they are now changing their Modus Operandi.

Based on county statistics, there were approximately 303 luxury car thefts in Monmouth County since 2021. In 22% of those instances, the suspects entered a residence to search for keys to a vehicle. Many times, the home owners are unaware their home was entered as they are fast asleep in another section of the house. Between 2021-2023 Hazlet Township has had 6 luxury car thefts and in 3 of these incidents the suspects entered the residence to look for keys. This is obviously an alarming crime trend that has our police department concerned.

Fortunately, Hazlet Police employ officers that are trained and certified in providing security assessments. These officers have been providing comprehensive security assessments to all (8) schools in the Hazlet School District, annually for several years now. Using this training and experience we developed a home security assessment program and have already started to offer this voluntary service free to Hazlet residents.

Our Home Security Assessments provide a complete review of all aspects of physical security at the home.

The typical Home Security Assessment includes:

  • Discussion with Homeowner in regards to current crime trends.
  • Interviews with homeowner to gain an understanding of security concerns, past security problems, and daily activities at the home.
  • Survey of exterior perimeter of site and home, including examination of site boundaries, perimeter fencing, landscaping, security lighting, and signage.
  • Survey of interior of home if necessary (Completely Voluntary)
  • Review of physical security devices, including doors, windows, safes, and lock hardware.
  • Review of security systems, including intrusion alarm systems, panic alarm systems, video surveillance systems, and security intercom systems.
  • Identification of likely security risks and potential threats.
  • Preparation of Home Security Assessment Report.

The Home Security Assessment Report provides an objective evaluation of your existing security measures, identifies areas of security weakness, and provides options to consider for security improvements at your home. While providing these options for security improvements we will advise homeowner of urgent problems that should be corrected immediately, things that would greatly improve security at the home, and optional enhancements to security that may come at a cost to the homeowner.
